ABOUT THE AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLE

One of the most common questions we hear is, “Does the Australian Labradoodle have Australian Shephard in it?”  The answer is no.

Despite the name, Australian Labradoodles do not contain Australian Shepherd.  The breed was carefully develped over many generations, beginning with the original Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross.  Breeders later incorporated a few other breed-including the English and American Cocker Spaniel, and in some lines, the Irish Water Spaniel and Curly Coated Retriever- to improved temperament, coat quality, health, and consistency.  Today, the Australian Labradoodle is a true multi-generational breed that is bred specifically for its loving temperament, intelligence, allergy-friendly coat, and outstanding family companionship.

The Australian Labradoodle breed dates back to the 1980’s and was initiated by Wally Conran of Royal Guide Dogs located in Victoria Australia. The original Labradoodle is a Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross.  As the Australian Labradoodle breed developed, carefully selected additional breeds were infused to create the consistent Australian Labradoodle we know today.  The intent was to create a breed that was allergy and asthma friendly with the temperament of a service dog. The journey was inspired by a vision impaired woman in Hawaii who needed a Guide Dog which wouldn’t aggravate her husband’s allergies. Of the 31 Labradoodles bred at Royal Guide Dogs, 29 made it through as Guide Dogs…an accolade of unparalleled proportion for this “new breed” of Guide Dog.

It takes more than a lab and a poodle to create an Australian Labradoodle. Careful multi-generational breeding produces the consistent temperament, health, coat quality and companionship that families love.

WHY WE CHOSE AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLES
After many years of breeding Goldendoodles, I chose to add Australian Labradoodles only after finding bloodlines that met my high standards for health, temperament, and family companionship. I believe these dogs make exceptional family members because of their loving nature, intelligence and eagerness to please.
